A practical approach for law firms

A law firm’s type system should handle the firm name, practice areas, longer explanations, and inquiry forms. Choose the identity treatment to fit the firm’s voice, then use a restrained structure for the information readers need to understand and compare.

Libre Baskerville with Inter is a starting comparison for a traditional name and supporting web text. The serif choice is an editorial preference, not proof of trustworthiness. Give practice-area headings consistent weight and space, and keep paragraphs at a comfortable width with clearly identified links.

Controlled experiments found no reading-speed advantage from adding serifs to the tested fonts. Arditi & Cho (2005) Readability requires attention to the actual type and setting, rather than a blanket claim that serif or sans serif is best.

Preview a long firm name, a substantial service explanation, and an inquiry form. Check the design at normal browser size and with text enlarged. Use clear labels for telephone contact, office locations, and the inquiry action. Have the firm review the service wording and any required notices before publication.

Long firm names and identity

Test the entire firm name, including partners, punctuation, and any location. Choose the display role to fit the identity, then use a supporting style for longer text. A traditional-looking name treatment is a stylistic choice rather than evidence of professional quality.

Practice-area explanations

Give practice areas a consistent heading level and keep paragraph lengths comfortable. Use descriptive link wording so a reader knows where the link leads. Test a substantial service explanation with the firm’s reviewed copy, not only a short headline.

Inquiry forms and required notices

Use direct labels for the office location, phone contact, and inquiry route. Give any required notices enough room and ordinary text. Review the page with enlarged browser text, and have the firm check wording and notices before publication.

Check before you commit

Ask readers to locate a practice area and contact method; enlarge web text and check that the layout remains usable.
